Bloomingpedia talk:Community Portal

From Bloomingpedia

Open Source Software

You might want link Open Source Software to the Wikipedia article or create a Bloomingpedia article on it. I don't know who most of the Bloomingpedia readers are, but I'm sure lots of people in Bloomington don't know what Open Source software is. Btornado 16:50, 20 Oct 2005 (GMT)

'People' section

What's the vision behind the "people" section? I was thinking of adding folks such as Hoagy Carmicheal and Herman Wells, or should I stick with living folks such as Bill Cook? --Cooley 16:13, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

Mark can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this page was developed mainly to stimulate the creation of articles off a list of dead links. We probably really need separate pages for thing like "Past Residents" and "Current Residents". I don't think there are any real well defined guidelines, but someone who is well known outside Bloomington would be a good barometer. I can see breaking each page up into categories (politicians, sports figures, entertainers, etc.). But I think for the purposes of the Community Portal list, I don't think there are any real guidelines. It's more of a placeholder to get people to write some articles. Each of these items is probably better tracked through other means. -Chrobb 18:36, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

Chrobb is right. The original intent of this page was to give newbies a central location for ideas of where to start or what we are focused on. As articles listed on these pages are created, we can take them off this page. But it doesn't have to work that way. Honestly, I wasn't sure when I first setup the wiki what Community Portal was for, so I checked Wikipedia and there it seems to be for giving an overview of what is going on on the wiki itself and giving ideas of things you can do on the wiki. My Bloomingpedia Milestones page might be better served off the portal page. As for who can have a person page. Anybody who has or had anything to do with Bloomington can. Really. If every person living in Bloomington has their own page describing who they are. That's fine. This also goes for anybody who has lived in Bloomington or even famous people who have been to Bloomington. For instance, Jerry Seinfeld could have a page explaining how when he was here that he had a private screening of a movie (forgot which one) at Kerasotes East. I don't want people to think that they can put too much into Bloomingpedia. You can't. Wikipedia currently has over 30GB worth of data and I've planned for this wiki to have as much or more if necessary. -- Mark 19:31, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

There will soon be a page for my Dog. He's crapped in Bloomington. :-) -Chrobb 19:45, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

Ok, just as long as you don't link to him from the Bloomington page. You probably do have a point though. I think that as long as people have a NPOV then it will still be ok. There will always be junk pages no matter where you draw the line.-- Mark 19:50, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

I won't tell him that you don't view him as a significant Bloomingtonian. It'll hurt his feelings and he'll hit the bones pretty hard tonight. -Chrobb 20:30, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

Revision with new content

Wow! We sure have come a long ways. I remember when this page used to be full of red links to empty articles. Now all of the articles have been created except for the residential association ones. Those are a bit harder to research I guess. Anyways, I'm going to remove a lot of the content and add some new stuff about assigning blocks downtown to people who want to tackle the research for them. -- Mark 00:27, 8 October 2006 (EDT)
