His Story

As a twenty year old junior at Indiana University, Jared stood 6’ 2’’ and weighed 425 pounds. At the time, he was consuming up to 10,000 calories a day, the number of calories normally recommended for five people.

Jared's parents and family were very concerned about the health risks he faced due to his weight and eating habits. Jared himself became concerned, realizing that everyday activities such as walking to class were a struggle.

He began exercising and walking to all classes rather than ride the bus, but these changes weren't enough. In 1998, Jared stumbled across a sign at the Subway next to his apartment advertising sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less. This advertisement drew his attention, and he picked up a nutritional brochure in order to develop his own diet.

The Subway Diet

In March of 1998 he began his new regimen - a cup of coffee for breakfast, a 6-inch turkey sub for lunch and a 12-inch veggie sub for dinner. His subs were purchased from the Subway next to the School of Optometry at the corner of Atwater and Woodlawn. None of his subs included oil, mayonnaise, or cheese. His meals also included Baked Lays and a diet soft drink. His friends and family motivated him with their support, and soon enough, the weight was coming off. He continued to walk to class rather than ride the bus and to exercise to enhance his weight loss. In March of 1999, Jared weighed 180 pounds.

A friend of Jared’s was an editor of the Indiana Daily Student and wrote about his accomplishment. His story was then picked up by Men’s Health magazine. That story was noticed by Subway’s national ad agency, and Jared began his national campaign in early 2000.

Jared’s Work

Jared has appeared in over 20 commercials, and is participating in the Jared & Friends School Tour, sponsored by the American Heart Association. Traveling around the nation with this program Jared has reached out to over 31,000 students, teaching them about the benefits of a healthy living. He has also appeared on numerous television shows, such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Larry King Live. He is now at a weight of 190 pounds and continues to eat Subway sandwiches, but now also includes other lowfat foods. He limits his amount of alcohol intake, only consumes diet beverages, and continues to walk regularly.
