Garrett Ewald

From Bloomingpedia

Garrett was a photographer based in Bloomington from 1981 to 2001, but active as a photographer from 1986 to 2001. There was a break from 11/1992 to 8/1994 while he was working in Southeast Asia. Prior to returning to photography he worked at WTIU and WTTV and with visiting video production teams in Bloomington.

Starting in January 1986 with the Indiana Daily Student he was also served as photo editor for three semesters and worked at the IDS through to graduation in 1988. Starting in 1987 he started stringing for the Associated Press covering sports and news in and around Bloomington. From 1988 to late 1992 he was the publications coordinator in the IU Athletic Department and also provided the majority of photos used in their publications. His photo of Anthony Thompson tying the career touchdown record hangs in Assembly Hall, and he also shot many of the team photos during this time. After returning from overseas he started Caravelle Communications to publish the Crimson Review, a photo review of the year in IU Athletics. The first edition covering 1994-1995 was the only one printed, but he continued shooting through 1996-1997 in the hopes of keeping the venture alive.

For several years he was the art director for the Ryder Magazine, and then returned to photographing IU Athletics for Inside Indiana while attending the Kelley School of Business until 2001.

In 2001 he relocated to New York City to work for IBM and hasn't been as active as a photographer, but he has shot several IU sporting events in the NY area in recent years. He is currently starting a non-profit with a photography mission. 1 Life, 1,000 Words will be a resource for families expecting a baby and beyond to help them capture the new life entering theirs in photographs. It will also work to develop training materials for photo journalism students and medical professionals, and is developing a database of photo journalists around the US to help families facing medical emergencies related to child birth and children.
