Cumberland Presbyterian Church

From Bloomingpedia

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church is a Christian denomination of the Presbyterian family that is present largely in the Southern United States. It was founded in the early 19th century by Presbyterians in Kentucky who disagreed with several of their denomination's principal teachings. The church was once strong in Indiana and other northern states, but most of its churches outside the South merged back into the Presbyterian Church in 1906.

Two Cumberland Presbyterian congregations once existed in rural parts of Monroe County: one in Harrodsburg and one in the countryside near Ellettsville. Little is known about either of these churches; both may have disappeared before the merger of 1906. These two churches are the only congregations of any Presbyterian denomination that have ever existed in Monroe County outside Bloomington, which was once home to congregations of five different Presbyterian denominations at the same time.
