Black Market

From Bloomingpedia

The Black Market was a small store at the current location of Peoples Park that catered to the African-American population of Bloomington. It was firebombed in 1968 by the Ku Klux Klan.

The owner was a man named Rollo Turner. The store sold books and music , as well as artwork, clothing, and jewelry. On December 26, 1968, a man drove by in a car and threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of the store. Turner's inventory was destroyed, and uninsured, for a loss of about $2000. Carlisle Briscoe and Jackie Kinser, KKK members, later confessed to the crime.
